How To Explore Dunes Of Despair?
Yeah, I have 99,4% Tyria Exploration and Half of the missing map is from there so I'd like to know how to explore it.
I have to leave my heroes to protect Turai Ossa, but when I go outside to explore I have to kill scarabs and mobs of monsters. That's nearly Impossible so can someone help me and tell me how to do it? Here's a photo of the place gw059.jpg Last edited by Big G; Jan 28, 2008 at 06:53 PM // 18:53.. |

You have to use the necrotic traversal trick. Well, you don't HAVE to, but that makes it easier. Read up about it on the wiki.

From Wiki:
Dunes of Despair: One of the trickier missions to explore. You will likely need a friend to stay with the Ghostly Hero along with henchmen to keep him alive while you explore. Alternatively, a single properly configured bonder monk hero will be able to keep Ghostly Hero alive for the entire 10 minute period, giving the rest of the party a chance to explore the area. Remember to flag the hero in the entrance corridor to avoid aggro. You can also try avoiding the enemy ghost altogether and using Necrotic Traversal to jump across the northern bridge. There are three enemy bases to explore at the southern end of the map, the western one will have a draw bridge drawn up. You can still walk through it. In addition, there is a very large area to explore east of the eastern most base accessible through a tight tunnel slightly north of the south-eastern base. Beware of the large number of Jade Scarabs that crawl out of the ground. The area north of where the second Siege Wurm spawns can be explored. Roughly 0.7%was uncovered doing this. Wiki page |

And That's the only way to do it?
To be honest I don't understand it... Can someone explain me what's going on in that style? |

There are two ways to do it.
One way is to do the mission the normal way and try to beat the timer while keeping the ghostly hero alive. The other way is to not allow the ghostly hero to get to the alter. The time doesn't start, but the gates won't open either. Someone in your party must have the skills Necrotic Traversal and Rebirth. You kill a mob on the other side of the gap, use NT to get to the other side. All members in your party that need to get across must now die (vampiric weapon is the best way). The person that has gotten across using NT now uses Rebirth as the others die, bringing them across the gap. You can now explore at your leisure. (Note: unless you have some way of getting back you cannot complete the mission) Just wanted to add: Talk to the ghostly hero before you get to the alter. He should say something like "I'll wait here" (not sure ... it's been a long time). That way you can be sure that he won't just walk to the alter by himself and activate timer. There may be some mad way to explore this area w/o NT, but I have my doubts; so yeah that is pretty much it.
Necrotic Traversal allows a necro to teleport to the spot of any corpse. So play out the level as normal until you reach the ghost, but now DO NOT talk to him. Instead head right past him and if you are lucky you can just reach a nasty to lure up and kill without the bridge being lowered. Next all party member arm vamp wepaons and kill themselves and then the Nec can ReBirth them all back on the far side without the mission timer starting. Explore and do the bonus with all the time in the world and then resign. Or you can leave 1 person to talk to the ghost and then the rest can run down and meet him. Time to thank the necro and jump for joy at your Tyrian GMC! |

Ok I am going to assume that you have explored all you can without using the glitch.
Things you need before you head into the mission: 1)A longbow or flatbow 2)A hero(or yourself) with both [skill]Necrotic Traversal[/skill] and [skill]Rebirth[/skill] 3) 1-3 vampiric weapons Enter the mission and travel the route you would normally if doing the mission. When you get to part where the ghostly hero lowers the bridge and you have to kill all the forgotten archers, talk to him to make him stay where he is. Kill all the archers, the forgotten warriors, and the enemy ghostly hero. Walk to the south where the bridge is up and you cannot get through. Climb the small hill to the left of the gate, pull out your longbow, and proceed to kill the boss and the forgotten. Sometimes the boss does not spawn within range of your bow, you simply have to resign and try again. After the boss is dead, have the hero (or you)with necrotic transversal use it on the bosses corpse to travel to the unreachable area. Then equip your other 2 heroes and yourself with the vampiric weapons and let the degen kill you, make sure if you brought a healing henchmen you flag her away, and disable any healing spells your heroes might have. After you die, have the hero rebirth you, you will be teleported across the bridge and now be in the unreachable area. Rebirth the other heroes and then explore at your leisure. Keep in mind that scarabs will still popup and there may be some forgotten around the areas you need to explore. Hope that helps Kel |

You can do it without Necrotic Transversal for option #3.
You'll need either a good human monk on your team, or a Bonder hero as per the wiki article quoted above. The monk will just hang back on the stairs and keep the Ghostly Hero alive for the duration of the timer. As I only play Monk for 55 farming, I can't advise further. I can, however, confirm it works, as I've done this mission 3 times with this method. edit: @OP I would advise against trying to kill everything if you are not using NT/Rebirth to teleport across. Instead, equip a running build, and just avoid everything. Also, there is a drawbridge pulled up in front of a chasm that you can ignore. When you see it, just run across; there is an "invisible" path where the drawbridge would be if it were lowered. Last edited by MisterB; Jan 28, 2008 at 07:57 PM // 19:57.. |

I should also note (yet again - I seem to have given Dunes advice dozens of times ^_^) that the vampiric weapons/rebirth method is no longer necessary since the advent of party flagging.
The simplest way now is to beat off the waves of enchanted at the drawbridge, then ignore the enemy ghostly altogether and run to the back of the fort. Flag your heroes/henchmen at the top of the part overlooking the first boss, then do the necrotic traversal trick. Now the clever part - using the radar, flag your entire party back to the enemy ghostly - the hero will stay where he is, and your party will kill the enemy. All you have to do now is unflag the party - all the heroes and henchmen will mysteriously run to your location, allowing you to do the bonus and map with ease. The only downside of this (tried and tested many times) method is the random nature of spawns - it make take several attempts until you get an enemy with an exploitable corpse within necrotic range.

Of course, since all you want to do is map the place, you can always do the "beat-the-clock" method enough times to explore the whole area. Take a running skill, run through the fort revealing as much as you can, rinse & repeat.

Hi, sorry for the bit of thread necromancy here but there's a part of this [Necrotic [email protected]] trick I don't understand. I need the SW portion of the map uncovered as shown here: http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/1241/gw005.jpg
I have tried luring the monsters on the other side but a flat/long bow can not seem to reach them so no NT. There is a drawbridge there but even if the ghostly hero is at the altar, it will never fall. How do I get over there if NT won't work and the draw bridge won't fall down? |
